OBV Studio Choir Program – Selection Information
The OBV Studio Choir Program maintains a high technical standard and while direct entry is possible, it is preferred that candidates will first participate in our Dreamers and/or Step Up! programs.
Selection Process
Entry into the SCP is via invitation, audition and interview. Invitations are offered to exceptional Year 5/6 singers from schools participating in One Big Voice who have been nominated by their teachers for soloist roles at the RAC Arena concert. Aspiring soloists who upload a video for the first stage of concert auditions may be contacted by OBV through their teacher and invited to apply for Step Up! participation. This is independent of the concert soloist audition process. Teachers are also able to directly recommend an individual to OBV at any time.
For OBV School Participants…
- Stage 1 of OBV Studio Choir auditions is via video upload. Soloists who have already submitted a video for concert roles will not need to do so again unless requested by the OBVSCP. Current SCP members and Step Uppers will be contacted directly and invited to re-apply and may be offered an exemption from audition. Selected applicants will be invited to proceed to…
- Stage 2. This will be an invitation to participate in our Step Up program. In exceptional circumstances an outstanding candidate may be offered the chance to audition for direct entry into the SCP. Year 4s may be invited into our Dreamers group.
- Teacher Recommendation: Any music/choir teacher from schools participating in One Big Voice may commend a student as being suitable for the Step Up/SCP.
For Current Dreamer and Step Up! choristers…
- Your progress will be monitored and you will be invited to participate in SCP auditions..
The OBV26 Studio Choir and Step Up! members will be announced on Thursday 3 July. Dreamers offers are made at the start of the following January.
What Are We Looking For?
- Normal kids! We believe kids should be kids. We are not looking for pop stars nor will we be treating you like one. The program offers gifted young people the chance to explore their potential, build confidence and develop social and teamwork skills alongside others who are similarly gifted.
- A natural and innate love of music and singing. The motivation must come from within.
- Musical aptitude, pitch, timing, feel, expression, x-factor.
- A team-first mentality, the ability to blend with others, musically and socially.
- Discipline: Aspects of the program can be demanding. Proper preparation for each session is expected. Practice is expected. Sessions can require sustained periods of concentration.
- Persistence: while there are many exciting experiences offered in the SCP, persistence is required to achieve the standard of excellence the SCP is committed to. We are seeking those able to think 2, 3 and 4 years ahead.
- Those for whom the above is their idea of fun.
Ongoing Membership
Members of the previous year’s Studio Choir can apply to continue in the program regardless of which school they now attend. Almost all the choir are now high school students.
Subjectivity and Feedback
- A degree of subjectivity is inevitable. OBV will endeavour to provide constructive feedback if able, upon request. Your patience is appreciated as we are dealing with large numbers of applicants.
